The days of playing it safe with neutrals in the desert is over, says kitchen and bath designer Lynn Wallace of Indian Wells. And she couldn’t be happier about it.

Wallace, a certified kitchen and bath designer, interior designer and contractor, has nothing against natural materials. She uses stone and tile extensively, and is adept at creating organic, Zen-like settings. Her philosophy: room designs should be harmonious, peaceful, and balanced, with lines that flow gracefully. But she celebrates the trend of having a little fun with your surroundings.

They are willing to have more eclectic kitchens and baths.

Wallace, who started her business after graduating from UCLA’s school of environmental design, she moved to the desert and opened her first showroom her in 1984. She is unusual in that after designing her projects, she also acts as the general contractor, overseeing each kitchen or bath until completion. She becomes the agent for the owners, solicitating bids from contractors, and working with subcontractors. “My jobs take more effort because they are much more custom.” she says.

Ideally, she works when homeowners are away; summer is her busiest time. Many clients have meetings with her and approve plans in the spring, then leave their outmoded kitchens to come back to an entirely new kitchen in the fall, complete with their cookware and dishes restocked in the new cupboards. A simple kitchen redo takes at least eight weeks, she figures, and as long as 12 weeks for tearing out walls and reconfiguring space.

“There is great joy in this work for me,” Wallace says. “Our lives are difficult. If I can bring a little bit of joy and harmony into lives with a well-designed kitchen or bathroom, it makes me happy and my clients too.”
